FINALLY WE SAID GOODBYE! (April 2021)

At the end of the our project we said  goodbye to all partners at the our  last online meeting. We were glad to work together on the  “Mysterious Ciphers” project. And we agreed to meet  in new  projects.

WE MADE INTERNATIONAL ONLINE CIPHER COMPETITION(March 24, 2021)

We held an online cipher competition via zoom on March 24, 2021. 64  project  partners from 8 country  partipicated  to competition. We enjoyed from this meeting with the Kahoot competition.

National teams made handmade cipher tool exhibitions
and  encryption  events  for  other students/ teachers/ administrators/ parents in their own schools

WE MADE HANDMADE CIPHER TOOLS WITH INTERNATIONAL TEAMS AND PRESENTED OUR WORKS WITH EXHIBITIONS

120 Students and 8 teachers worked in 15 international teams. Students made handmade cipher tools and posters. Then “VIRTUAL EXHIBITION” was created with the work of mixed international teams. Finally, all partners disseminated the virtual exhibition in their own countries. LINK

WE DEVOLOPED OUR OWN UNIQUE ENCRYPTION METHODS

National teams devoloped their own unique encription methods and  presented their methods through online meetings. At each meeting, two country team introduced their unique method and other countries attended the meetings as  listener. After all meetings were completed, we created wakelet collection with all the presentataions.

STUDENTS DESIGNED THE PROJECT LOGO/POSTER

Students designed the project logo/poster. We created a wakelet collection with the design of all students.

WE BROKE THE CODES

Romanian teacher Monica HULEA prepared code breaking tasks. The students broke these codes.  These tasks come from the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. Bebras is an international initiative that aims to promote Informatics and computational thinking among school students at all ages. The idea of Bebras Competition was born in Lithuania, by Prof. Valentina Dagiene from University of Vilnius.

WE PLAYED THE MAZE GAME

Slovak teacher Monika POLANSKA prepared maze game. The students found the right way and deciphered a famous math sentence encrypted with numbers on the way . The students who first solved the maze groups were awarded with the “fastest” badge.

WE PLAYED THE ESCAPE GAME

Turkish teacher Nevin BİLGİÇLİ prepared the escape game. The students decrypted secret clues and solved the mysterious event. The students who decyrpted all clues and solved the event were awarded with “code breaker” badge.

COUNTRIES WROTE ENCRYPTED LETTERS TO EACH OTHER

Each school wrote encrypted letters about new year wishes to the partner school . Students decrypted letters. And then we created “common encrypted letters e-book”. Our book consists of 60 pages and includes 10 county  letters and New year/Christmas decorations.

WE PRESENTED OTHER ENCRYPTION METHODS

Each  national team prepared  presetations  about the modern  or historical encrytion methods. And they prapared the small games for partner students about these methods

EVENT WITH VIGENERE CIPHER- Sound from my country

Pupils learned “Vigenere Cipher” method. 103 project student encrypted a song/singer name from their country and shared video of this song. And then each student deciphered the name of a song/singer from other countries.

ENCRYPTION METHOD 5- VIGENERE CIPHER

* After most monoalphabetic ciphers were broken with the frequency analysis method, the search for a safer method has begun.

* French cryptographer Blaise de Veginere developed Veginere cipher  in 1586.

* This method is a derivative of the Caesar technique. It's differenses from Caesar is that it is shifted according to an unstable periodic number sequence. Therefore, repeating letters correspond to another letter each time. In other words, these cipher cannot be decrypted using the frequency method.

Curriculum topics related to Vigenere Cipher/ Aim: Sequences, Matrix, Permutation

HOW DOES IT WORK?

*   A square matrix board of type nxn is used for the alphabet with n letters. The standart table is as follows.

Vigenere Board (Tabula Recta)

There is a common key text that the sender and recipient know. From the first row (first horizontal) find the letters of the plain text, from the first column (first vertical) find the letters of the key text, and then combined. Intersection points create the encrypted text.

EXAMPLE

ENCRYPTION

If you want to encrypt " HELP ME QUICKLY PLEASE" plaitext with the "NİCE DAY"

PlaintextHELPMEQUICKLYPLEASE
KeytextNICEDAYHELPMEQUICKL
CiphertextUMNTPEOBMNZXCFFMCCP

You find "UMNTPEOBMNZXCFFMCCP" ciphertext.

Method:Vigenere, Plaintext: HELP ME QUICKLY PLEASE, Keytext= NICE DAY, Ciphertext= UMNTPEOBMNZXCFFMCCP

DECRYPTION

Decryption can make simularly with Vigenere board. If you want decrypt ciphertext "UMNTPEOBMNZXCFFMCCP"  with keytext "NİCE DAY"

PlaintextHELPMEQUICKLYPLEASE

You find Plaintext: HELP ME QUICKLY PLEASE
